Folding Phone Boom: Apple Surges Production Targets
Supply chain data indicates Apple has significantly raised its manufacturing goals for the new foldable device following a surge in early sales.

New supply chain intelligence indicates that Apple has dramatically increased its manufacturing orders for the iPhone Duo by more than 40 percent. This substantial ramp-up in production is a direct response to what the company characterized as extraordinary pre-order demand. The move signals a major shift in the company's short-term hardware strategy, aiming to meet a consumer appetite that has outpaced initial expectations for the first-generation folding device.
The urgency behind this production increase became apparent immediately after pre-orders opened on Friday. Almost instantly, customers reported that their estimated delivery dates were slipping, with some shipments pushed into late January. While it was initially difficult for observers to determine whether these delays stemmed from high consumer interest or logistical bottlenecks, the latest reports strongly suggest that demand was the primary driver. To manage the volume and mitigate the impact of scalpers, Apple restricted purchases to a maximum of two units per customer.
As a result of the heightened demand, Apple has revised its shipment targets for the first twelve months of the device's lifecycle. According to DigiTimes, which cited sources within the supply chain, the company has boosted its expected unit count from 9.7 million to 14 million. This adjustment reflects a confident forecast that the strong sales momentum will continue well beyond the initial launch window.
For early adopters, the hardware is available, but the software ecosystem is still catching up. Users are currently navigating a landscape where third-party applications have not yet been fully optimized for the unique form factor of the folding phone. However, Apple maintains that the situation is improving rapidly as developers integrate support for the new hardware. Initial reviews based on a week of usage have consistently highlighted app compatibility as a key area of focus for the user experience.
Beyond software, reviewers have also noted the decision to use Touch ID rather than Face ID on the current model. This design choice has been a point of discussion in early assessments. Nevertheless, the latest reporting suggests that the company is already looking ahead to the next iteration. It is reported that Apple is currently testing prototypes of the iPhone Duo 2 that feature Face ID, indicating a plan to reintroduce the biometric facial recognition system in the upcoming generation of the foldable line.
The rapid adjustment of supply targets underscores the competitive nature of the smartphone market in 2026. By scaling up production so aggressively within weeks of launch, Apple is positioning itself to capture a larger share of the folding phone market before competitors can establish a foothold. The transition from a 9.7 million unit target to 14 million units is a significant logistical undertaking, requiring coordinated efforts across global manufacturing partners to ensure that the hardware arrives to meet the revised delivery timelines.
